You’ve heard the idiom, “A marriage made in heaven.” There is a lot of truth to that old saying. After all, marriage was made in heaven. Marriage is God’s brain child and He meant for it to be a reflection of the love He has for His people. Furthermore at the very foundation of marriage is the corner stone of faithfulness. Just as God said, “never will I leave you, never will I forsake you”, so marriage is based on that very same principle.

Sadly, the reality is that in the majority of marriages today, the image of God’s love and faithfulness is not being reflected very well to the world or to each another. With 50% of marriages ending in divorce, 66% separating and not reconciling, and another 20% of married couples saying they are unhappy we need to ask ourselves what’s going on here.

It’s my experience (personally and professionally) that we expect marriage to be easy. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is most of us entered into marriage with little preparation and know how about how to do married life. Even with the preparation that some of us receive; it’s very hard to anticipate the real deal. We are taken back when our relationship doesn’t flow as well as it did when we were dating.

What we do know is that God has given us “everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (2 Peter 1:3), and that applies to marriage. With a willing heart and a humble spirit our marriages can be all God intended and all we desire them to be.
