Birth Control and Christian Stewardship

(Available for immediate download:
Position Paper on Birth Control and Christian Stewardship)

birth control
Have you ever thought of birth control as a Christian stewardship issue? With approximately 74% of protestant women using birth control and even more catholic women one might assume that using birth control is strictly a matter of personal freedom and is not a faith or stewardship issue at all.

You might be thinking, "after all if it were really a biblical matter wouldn't we have heard about it during pre-marriage counseling or during that weekend marriage conference we went to?" The church wants people to have successful marriages, but we seem to shy away from frankly discussing this all important matter for which God created marriage...be fruitful and multiply and subdue the earth (Genesis 1:28).

Birth control is generally considered a very private matter between husband and wives and one that is governed solely by the principles of Christian liberty, but scripture tells a different story. The scriptures are replete with principles on this subject that is so near and dear to God's heart for many reasons.

Because so many forms of birth control are readily available, many Christians simply assume it is the responsible thing to do as part of planning a family. However, the effects of these methods on the mother, the seed or life source, and also on a growing baby are destructive and harmful - many of these methods are abortifacients that destroy newly conceived life in the womb. The result, a silent and unintentional and perpetual holocaust occurring in the wombs of Christian women everywhere. Mothers and fathers may not see what is going on in the secret place, but nothing is hidden from God's sight.

"I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you." Genesis 17:6

Scripture teaches us that the earth is the LORD's and everything in it (Psalm 24). That everything was created by Christ and for Christ that He would have the supremacy in all things (Colossians 1:18). The Author and Creator of life, by His wise design, has given mankind, and especially Believers, the responsibility to fill the earth with godly offspring and steward His creation. God's parallel command in the new testament comes from Jesus who said go into all the world and make disciples (Matthew 28:19).

The covenant promises God made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are bound up in God's mandate to make godly offspring - yet, the influences of the world have penetrated the church with lies and have convinced many of her members that having more than 1, 2 or 3 children is irresponsible and that using birth control is part of your civic duty to prevent "over population."

Additionally, because of the widespread usage of these methods and procedures we assume that they are beneficial for the health of our bodies and relationships. But is this true? Besides the numerous side effects related with most birth control methods, the pharmacology and methodology express hate and hostility toward God's wisdom and order. While the physical effects of using birth control are well documented, we cannot neglect to consider the relational aspect. How is using birth control helping husband and wives to advance the cause of Christ in their marriages and in the world? How is it improving their family life and marriage relationship? Dr. Janet Smith has written extensively on this topic.

Dr. Smith, is just one of many Christian theologians and pastors quoted and cited in the position paper Be Fruitful and Multiply: Christian Stewardship of Procreative Capabilities: The Use of Pharmaceutical, Medical and Surgical Interventions in the Prevention, Control and Advancement of Conception of Life in the Body of Christ. This paper outlines 23 premises found in scripture and answers 5 questions on the topic: the first one being the place of Christian liberty in stewarding reproductive capabilities.
